As gas prices continue to rise and drivers are looking for ways to save on fuel, now is a great time to dispel frequent myths about gas mileage. Here are some answers to common questions about fuel economy from our Toyota service center.

  1. Should I roll my windows up to save gas?

Some drivers think the extra “drag” from open windows can slow down your car and decrease fuel efficiency. While it is true that using the air conditioning will affect your gas mileage, the same is not true for driving with the windows down.

  1. Does idling use less gas than starting the engine?

Modern hybrids and vehicles with stop-and-start systems quickly disprove this myth. Idling does waste gas, and starting your engine does not take more power than letting it sit running while you’re stationary. Best to just turn it off.

  1. Does a little extra weight affect gas mileage?

You may think those few extra bags or supplies won’t make a difference, but the truth is, even small differences in weight can affect your fuel economy. Leave behind whatever you can on the next long drive to get a few extra miles on your tank.

  1. Should I over-inflate my tires to save gas?

This is perhaps one of the most ineffective gas myths out there, because over- or under-inflated tires are actually one of the biggest culprits of wasted gas. It’s best to keep your tires at the recommended PSI to avoid wasting gas on a regular basis.

  1. Does premium fuel give you better mileage?

If your vehicle was not specifically designed to use premium gas, there is rarely a benefit to using it over regular fuel. It’s best to follow your specific car’s instructions for what type of gas to use—especially since premium fuel can be costly.
